World Famous Old Blacksmiths

About the Old Blacksmiths Shop

Old SmithyA unique and romantic venue, the Old Blacksmiths Shop plays a founding part in the history of Gretna Green and opened to the public as a visitor attraction as early as 1887.  Built around 1712, the historic building was originally the workshop of the local blacksmith who would marry eloping couples who'd fled over the border after the introduction of England's marriage act in 1748.  Although marriages took place in many Inns, coaching houses and at Gretna Hall, popular folklore has always cast the Blacksmith at the heart of Gretna Green weddings.  The 'Old Smithy' now sits in a courtyard of shops with the original workshop and marriage room at the heart of the museum tour.

The Old Blacksmiths is still a busy and popular tourist destination and the venue receives many coach parties, throughout the summer months especially.  Outside there is a kissing gate and Gretna Green sign and photographic opportunities at the front of the building.

Capacity: 2-60

Reception/Accommodation: The Old Smithy is in Gretna Green where there are many hotels very close nearby.  We can assist and advise.

Points to consider: Privacy can be a problem as there are always many tourists around.  The venue also has no gardens as such for photography.
